About Coinbase

Description: Coinbase is a cryptocurrency exchange that allows users to buy, sell, store, and transfer cryptocurrency (crypto). It also offers other services like staking, saving, and earning. Coinbase's mission is to create an open financial system and increase economic freedom for people to convert crypto into and out of their local currency.

Coinbase Wallet

Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet that gives you complete control of your crypto. This means that the private keys (that represent ownership of the cryptocurrency) for your Wallet are stored directly on your device and not with a centralized exchange like Coinbase.com. You can think of Coinbase Wallet as similar to a traditional wallet that holds your cash, meaning you have direct access to and control of your crypto assets without needing to go through the brokerage.

📝 Note that Coinbase Wallet is not the same product as Coinbase.com, and you do not need a Coinbase.com account to use Coinbase Wallet or vice versa.

What you will be able to do with this connection

This connection setup enables two features:

  1. Route money into your Coinbase Wallet (also called “pushing” funds).
  2. Transfer funds from an income source/pod to Coinbase.com (also called “pulling” funds).

📝 This article is not designed to teach you how crypto wallets or crypto storage work. If you find crypto wallets daunting, your best option is to use the pull method.

Requirements to Connect

  • You have an account on Coinbase.com for the pull setup.
  • You have Coinbase Wallet installed on a mobile device or installed as a browser extension.
    • You will need your account and routing numbers once generated. We will walk you through that below.
    • You will need whatever device you have your Coinbase Wallet installed on.
  • You have a Sequence account.
  • You will need whatever device you use Sequence on - desktop or laptop.
  • You may encounter some Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). So, you may need one or more of the following:
    • Whatever device you receive text messages on
    • Whatever device you use to access the Coinbase Mobile app
    • Whatever device you use to access your preferred authenticator app

Connection Instructions

Below, we will use two methods to get money from Sequence to Coinbase / Coinbase Wallet. The Pull Method uses a standard pull-from-pod method that allows Coinbase to transfer USD from a Sequence pod. The Push Method takes advantage of Coinbase Wallet’s direct deposit feature.

If you’ve connected manual accounts using Sequence previously, you should be able to run through that section reasonably quickly.

Routing and account numbers can be found regardless of whether you use Coinbase Wallet on your browser or your mobile app.

The Pull Method: The Many Ways to Leverage a Sequence Pod at Coinbase

This process will be familiar if you’ve used an ACH (Automatic Clearing House) transfer to move money from a bank account to Coinbase. If this is your first ACH setup at Coinbase, you’ll find this guide helpful.

The below method has two overall tasks:

  1. Create a pod in your Sequence money map.
  2. Add:
    1. The pod created in task 1 to Coinbase’s list of eligible Payment Methods.
    2. The debit card associated with the pod you created in task 1 to Coinbase’s list of Payment Methods.

💡 Use Sequence rules to fill your investment/crypto pod. Currently, Coinbase only offers one-time ACH transfers.

Task 1: Create a pod in your Sequence money map

  1. Click this link to navigate to the Sequence login page and log in.

  2. On the bottom center of your money map click the Add Pod button.

  4. You should now have your newly created pod visible as a node in your Sequence money map.

  5. Click on your pod to open the slide out drawer containing the details view.

The Push Method: Using Sequence to route money to Coinbase

With this push method, you can route funds to your Coinbase Wallet. Incoming USD payments are automatically converted to USDC 1:1 in your Coinbase Wallet Bridge. USDC is sent to your Coinbase Wallet on the Base network at a 1:1 conversion rate (for example, 100 USD = 100 USDC).

📝 Be aware that transactions under the minimum amount of $1 will not be processed.

Task 1: Generate Your Coinbase Wallet Routing and Account Numbers

On a desktop browser or mobile app, you can obtain your Coinbase Wallet routing and account numbers. Since the procedure is identical for either device, below are the unified instructions.

Set up and use direct deposit.

  1. Open your Coinbase Wallet.

  2. Select Transfer, then Receive to open up the different receiving options.

  3. Select Receive USD.

📝 If you do not see the "Receive USD" option in your Wallet, the feature is not yet available in your area.

  4. Follow the instructions to verify your identity through Bridge. Expect to provide the following:

    1. Standard KYC/AML PII (Personally Identifiable Information), including name, address, and Social Security Number.
    2. Photo ID - state driver’s license or US passport. You can use a scanned copy (image file) or use your mobile device’s camera.
    3. A 3D face-only selfie. The photo is taken via the interface in real-time. No prior images may be submitted.
  5. Once verification is complete, you'll see your direct deposit details (account and routing numbers).

    • Select the Receive USD option to view the account details again anytime.

Task 2: Creating a Manual Account

This process should be familiar if you have previously created a manual account in Sequence. If this is your first manual account, the steps are listed below.

  1. Click this link to navigate to the Sequence login page.

  2. Click the Add Account button on the bottom center of your money map.

  3. Select the Beneficiary & Depository Account

  4. In the Search field of the “Select your institution” dialogue box, start typing manual .

  5. Click the Connect account manually button.

  6. You should now see the “Connect Account Manually” dialogue box.

  7. Enter Beneficiary Name, and the Routing Number & Account Number obtained in Task 1. Click Submit.

  8. You should now have an account node on your Sequence money map representing your Coinbase Wallet.

    • You can do the following with this Coinbase Wallet node:
      • Customize:
        • Account name
        • Account description
        • Account icon
      • Route money into this account using Sequence rules and any mix of:
        • Income Sources
        • Pods
        • External accounts

Testing

If you would like to test your connection, you can use Sequence to run a manual transfer either by:

  1. Clicking on the Transfer Manually button located in the upper right of the Activity Log screen or
  2. Creating a connection between nodes and selecting One-time transfer.

⚡ For faster manual transfers use money already in a pod. Transfers from pods to external accounts are 2x faster than transfers from external accounts to external accounts.
