Charles Schwab

What you will be able to do with this connection

This connection setup enables two features:

  1. Visibility of total balance.
  2. Route money into your account (also called “pushing” funds).

Requirements to Connect

  • You have an account with Charles Schwab
    • You will need your account and routing numbers. We will walk you through that below.
  • You have a Sequence account.
  • You will need whatever device you use Sequence on - desktop or laptop.
  • You’ll likely encounter some Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). So, you’ll need:
    • Whatever device you receive text messages on
    • Whatever device you use the Charles Schwab Mobile app on

Connection Instructions

If you’ve connected accounts using Plaid previously, you should be able to run through that section fairly quickly.

Routing and account numbers can be found via the Browser interface or the mobile app. Instructions for both are below.

Connecting via Plaid

The following process enables a connection with Plaid that enables the display of your Charles Schwab account balance:

  • Click this link to navigate to the Sequence login page.

  • On the bottom center of your money map click the add account button.

  • Select the Beneficiary & Investment Account

  • You should now see the Plaid connector.

  • Click Continue to go to the next step.

  • Enter your Phone number and click continue. Note that if you have previously used Plaid your phone number may be autofilled.

  • Plaid will send you a text message with a code. Enter the code and you should move to the institution selection screen.

    • We should only see investment institutions because back in step 3 we selected “Investment account.”
  • In this case we will select Charles Schwab.

    • If you don’t see Charles Schwab listed in the displayed institutions then start typing Charles Schwab in the search field.
  • You should see the screen below directing you to login at Charles Schwab.

  • Click the “Continue to login” button and a new browser window will open with the Charles Schwab login page.

  • Enter your credentials and click the “Log In” button.

  • After clicking “Log in,” you may receive a notification on your phone from the Charles Schwab app as a form of MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication).

    • Approve the login on your phone to move forward.
  • Next, you will need to approve “Instruction and Informed Consent to Allow Third-Party Lance Global Inc Access to Your Account Information.”

    • Please review and approve as you see fit.
    • Note that approval is required to move forward.
  • Check the box and click Continue.

  • A double confirmation box pops up. Click Accept.

  • You should now see an account selection screen displayed.

  • Select accounts you would like to include by checking the appropriate boxes.

    • Optionally check the “Automatically link new Schwab accounts in the future” if you would like any new accounts to be automatically connected.
  • Click Continue.

  • On the Review screen click Done. Plaid will now work its connection magic. 🪄

  • You should now see a Charles Schwab node representing your account in your Sequence money map.

⚡ Don’t be concerned if the node doesn’t display your balance and instead displays Action required. In the next step we will fix this.

Adding your Routing and Account Numbers

  • After completing the Plaid connection you should have at least 1 Charles Schwab account node in your Sequence money map. However, it likely says ”Action Required.”

  • Click on the node to open the slide out view with your account details. You should see an orange colored warning about connecting your routing and account numbers.

  • Click on the connect icon & text on the righthand side of the warning.

  • You should now see The “Connect Investment Account” dialogue box where you will enter your routing number and account number.

  • There are 2 places you can get those numbers:

  • Charles Schwab desktop browser app
  1. Use your preferred browser to login to Charles Schwab.

  2. After clicking login you may receive a notification on your phone from the Charles Schwab as a form of MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication).

    1. Approve the login on your phone to move forward.
  3. On the top navbar click on “Move Money.”

  5. On the next screen select the account you want routing and account numbers for.

    3.png

⚠️ Note that it’s important that your accounts are matched. The Charles Schwab account in the browser app must match the Charles Schwab account in your Sequence money map. Incorrect routing and account numbers may cause your money to route to the incorrect account.

  6. You want the routing and account numbers under the section labeled “Direct Deposit and sending money to a Schwab account”

  1. Transfer the Routing and account numbers obtained in the previous step to the Sequence dialogue box opened in step 4.
  2. Click Submit and the orange warning should disappear.
  • Charles Schwab mobile app
    1. On your mobile device open the Charles Schwab App and log in.

    2. On the navbar at the bottom click on the accounts icon.

    3. You should now see a list of account(s) with 1 account per row.

    4. Click on the three vertical dots at the end of the row and to the right of the account balance.

⚠️ Note that it’s important that your accounts are matched. The Charles Schwab account in the mobile app must match the Charles Schwab account in your Sequence money map. Incorrect routing and account numbers may cause your money to route to the incorrect account.

    5. Select “Routing Numbers”

    6. You want the routing and account number under the Direct Deposit heading.

Testing

If you would like to test your connection, you can go to your Sequence Activity Log and run a manual transfer by clicking on the “Transfer Manually” button located in the upper right of the Activity Log screen.

⚡ For faster manual transfers use money already in a pod. Transfers from pods to external accounts are 2x faster than transfers from external accounts to external accounts.
